The Parkview Potjiekos Competition Returns This July

The fires are being lit once again as the Parkview Potjiekos Competition returns to George Hay Park on Sunday, 26 July 2026 for a day filled with food, fun, friendly rivalry and community spirit.

Teams will gather from early morning with their ingredients, recipes and plenty of gees as they prepare to battle it out for the title of Ultimate Potjiekos Champion. Each team creates a name, chooses a theme, decorates their stand and cooks their own take on one of South Africa’s favourite traditions. Prizes will be awarded for the Top 3 Potjies, Best Stand Décor and Gees Award, making the day about far more than just what’s in the pot.

From traditional favourites to creative twists, every pot tells its own story and every bowl served helps support Nicarela’s charitable beneficiaries which can be found on our beneficiaries page!

For guests, the day is all about soaking up the atmosphere. Wander between the different potjie stands, meet the teams, enjoy the gees, choose which potjie to try and settle in for a proper family day out. Each potjie portion includes a free side of pap or rice, with full and half portions available on the day.

Expect live music, a lively beer tent, Agar’s Brewery, jumping castles for the kids, food stalls, pancakes, coffee, breads, ribs and more tasty treats to be announced. With entertainment from Steve Walls, plenty of local flavour and a park full of community spirit, it’s set to be one of Parkview’s favourite days of the year. Not to mention our ever famous Auction day! Where you can buy unique items such as one of a kind paintings, holidays and other interesting things!

Whether you’re entering a team or simply joining us to feast, relax and support a great cause, the Parkview Potjiekos Competition is a celebration of everything we love most:

Food. Competition. Community. Purpose.

How it works:

Entering the Parkview Potjiekos Competition is all about great food, team spirit and gees. Teams of up to 4 people enter together, choose a team name and theme, decorate their stand and cook a potjie of their choice on the day. There are various sizes of pots so you can maximize on your flavours!

Teams arrive early to set up their stand, prepare their ingredients and get their potjies going before guests arrive from 09:30. Coals are provided by the Nicarela event, but teams are responsible for bringing their own ingredients, equipment, décor and everything needed to bring their theme to life.

Each team will submit a small tasting portion of their potjie to the judges at the judging panel. The judges will taste all entries and score them on flavour, creativity and overall presentation. Prizes will be awarded for the Top 3 Potjies, Best Stand Décor and Gees Award.

Throughout the day, guests will move between the stands, meet the teams, enjoy the atmosphere and purchase portions of the different potjies. Every bowl served helps raise funds all to help Nicarela’s beneficiaries create sustainable change.

Gather your team, bring your gees and cook for a cause.
